A travel back in time: Karussell shortly before closing. And all the way back to the very beginning.

Karussell closed on March 29, 2014. This text refers to the time when it was still open.
Karussell (German for carousel) is an independent cultural platform in Zurich. It offers possibilities for artists and other creatives to showcase and sell their work. By running an improvised bar, a place is created which functions as a meeting point, workspace and hub. The shop fitting is made of second hand furniture we received free of charge and is then put up for sale at low prices. The venue offers space for innovative ideas while Karussell is an experiment itself – it is supposed to stay in motion constantly.

Das Karussell ist seit dem 29. März 2014 geschlossen. Der Text bezieht sich auf die Zeit, als es noch in Betrieb war.
Das Karussell ist eine unabhängige Kulturplattform in Zürich, auf welcher Künstler, Designer und andere Kulturschaffende ihre Arbeiten zeigen und verkaufen können. Durch einen improvisierten Barbetrieb wird ein Ort geschaffen, der als Treffpunkt, Arbeitsplatz und Drehscheibe funktioniert. Die Einrichtung entsteht aus Secondhand-Möbeln, die gratis abgegeben und günstig gekauft werden können. Der Raum bietet Platz für Unkonventionelles, und das Karussell ist selbst ein Experiment - das Ganze soll ständig in Bewegung sein.

I founded the platform in November 2012, meanwhile four team members are involved. Furthermore we implement different kinds of projects in cooperation with a large number of partners. As a gallery Karussell has organised more than ten exhibitions up to now, as a venue we hosted numerous concerts, YouTube nights, videogame nights, screenings, readings, a pop-up store, a book fair, a theatre play, parties and much more. The integrated shop displays clothes and design products by local as well as international designers.
Ich habe die Plattform im November 2012 gegründet. Mittlerweile sind insgesamt vier Teammitglieder am Projekt beteiligt, dazu zahlreiche Partner, mit denen die unterschiedlichsten Projekte realisiert werden. Als Galerie beherbergte das Karussell bisher über zehn Ausstellungen, als Eventlokal wurden zahlreiche Konzerte ermöglicht, dazu Youtube-Nights, Video(Game)-Abende, Filmvorführungen, Lesungen, ein Pop-up Store, eine Buchmesse, ein Theaterstück, Partys und vieles mehr. Der integrierte Shop präsentiert Kleider und Designprodukte von lokalen und internationalen Designer/innen.

By doing a varied programme different disciplines shall be put into a new context. We aim to create an unconventional approach to art and culture; the concert visitor coincidentally sees an exhibition, the guest in the café buys something in the shop. The viewer becomes a participant and vice versa.
As an autonomic project Karussell doesn’t draw any funding. However, at the beginning of 2014 I received the “Preis für studentisches Engagement” (award for student commitment) by Zalando via Zurich University of the Arts, endowed with 1000 CHF. Karussell was a temporary project, the building was demolished in April 2014.
Most of the pictures were taken by me, some by partners of Karussell.
Durch das vielseitige Programm sollen unterschiedliche Disziplinen in einen neuen Kontext gesetzt werden. Wir möchten einen unkonventionellen Zugang zu Kunst und Kultur ermöglichen; der Konzertbesucher sieht gleichzeitig eine Ausstellung, der Gast im Café kauft etwas im Shop, der Betrachter wird zum Teilnehmer und umgekehrt.
Als autonomes Projekt bezieht das Karussell keinerlei Fördergelder. Anfang 2014 erhielt ich über die ZHdK jedoch den Preis für studentisches Engagement von Zalando, der mit 1000 CHF dotiert ist.
Das Karussell war ein temporäres Projekt, das Gebäude wurde im April 2014 abgerissen.

The closing event of Karussell was a 30 hours party with eleven concerts.
