Zurich Art Space Guide
Art museums, established and commercial galleries in Zurich are well covered by art and culture guides. In contrast, independent, alternative art spaces, of which there are many in the city, are not represented equally. Together with Andreas Marti, founder of the art space “Dienstgebäude” and Anne-Laure Franchette, former associate at Karussell we intended to publish a guide to remedy these deficiencies. We tried to research as many art spaces as possible and get in touch with them. To get a complete directory an entry should be free and publishing should not depend on the explicit affirmation of a space. However, we sent the contact details we had researched to each project to have them counter-check the information. The City and Canton of Zurich financially supported the guide, because its free distribution was a prerequisite. Amongst other things I took on the drawing of a simplified city map for the localisation of the spaces as well as the graphic design of the entire flyer. In order to adapt to the dynamic (underground) art scene the guide will be updated and published in a new edition biannually.
The photos show the launch event of the guide at Dienstgebäude, (at the same time the closing of the exhibition “Catch of the Year” took place). The first edition was released in January 2014.

Kunstmuseen, institutionalisierte und kommerzielle Galerien in Zürich sind von verschiedenen Kunst- und Kulturführern bestens erfasst. Nicht so die unabhängigen, alternativen Kunsträume der Stadt, von denen es eine beträchtliche Anzahl gibt. Mit Andreas Marti, Gründer des Art Spaces „Dienstgebäude“ und Anne-Laure Franchette, ehemalige Mitarbeiterin im Karussell, sollte ein Guide herausgegeben werden, der dieses Manko beseitigt. Wir recherchierten möglichst viele Kunsträume und setzten uns mit ihnen in Verbindung. Damit der Guide vollständig wird, sollte ein Eintrag kostenlos sein und nicht von der expliziten Zustimmung eines Spaces abhängen. Wir schickten jedoch an jedes Projekt die jeweiligen Kontaktangaben zur Kontrolle. Der Guide wurde von Stadt und Kanton Zürich finanziell unterstützt; er sollte auf jeden Fall gratis abgegeben werden. Ich übernahm unter anderem das Zeichnen einer reduzierten Karte für die Lokalisierung der Spaces sowie die grafische Gestaltung des gesamten Faltblatts. Um der dynamischen (Untergrund-)Kunstszene gerecht zu werden, wird der Guide halbjährlich aktualisiert und in einer neuen Edition herausgegeben.
Die Fotos zeigen den Launch des Guides im Dienstgebäude, (zeitgleich fand die Finissage der Ausstellung „Catch of the Year“ statt). Die erste Edition wurde im Januar 2014 herausgegeben.
